What is Lipedema and do I have it?
Lipedema (sometimes mistaken for cellulite) is a chronic condition primarily affecting women, where there is an abnormal accumulation of fat, usually in the legs, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes the arms. The condition leads to painful swelling, bruising and inflammation, and the fat tissue becomes resistant to traditional weight loss methods, such as diet and exercise. Even with substantial weight loss, as many people experience, the fat associated with lipedema does NOT go away, which makes it distinct from obesity. It’s important to note that this is not simply “stubborn fat”; lipedema is a medical disease of the fat cells.

Key Features of Lipedema:

Pain and Sensitivity: The affected areas often become painful to the touch and bruise easily.

Symmetrical Fat Distribution: The fat distribution is usually symmetrical, affecting both legs or arms.

Swelling: Swelling in the lower body is common, especially after long periods of standing.

Resistant to Weight Loss: Traditional weight loss methods do not reduce the fat tissue in the affected areas, but weight loss can help reduce pressure on the body.

Lipedema and Women:

Lipedema predominantly affects **women**—in fact, about **90-99% of all cases** occur in women. This makes it a significant women’s health issue that often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as simple obesity or lymphedema.

Lipedema Statistics:

Prevalence: It’s estimated that **11% of women** globally may suffer from lipedema, though this condition often goes undiagnosed.

In the U.S., it’s estimated that **up to 17 million women** may have lipedema, although many are unaware they have the condition because of a lack of awareness among both the public and healthcare providers.

Onset: Lipedema typically appears during hormonal changes, such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.

Impact: Without proper treatment, lipedema can progress, leading to immobility, joint issues, and in some cases, mental health issues such as depression due to physical discomfort and body image concerns.

How We Can Help Manage Lipedema:
While lipedema cannot be cured, it can be managed with various treatments aimed at reducing pain, swelling, and improving mobility:

1. RF & Ultrasound Lymphatic Drainage: Manual lymphatic drainage and compression therapy help reduce swelling by improving lymphatic flow.

2. Consistent Treatments: Regular treatments, including specialized massages and Lipo Dissolving injections, help break down the hardened fat cells and reduce inflammation.

3. Peptide Therapy: Using GLP-1 peptide treatments can help regulate insulin and reduce overall inflammation in the body, which can assist in symptom relief.

4. Healthy Weight Management: Although lipedema fat is resistant to weight loss, reducing overall body fat can alleviate pressure on your joints and reduce inflammation.

5. Exercise: Low-impact exercises like swimming, walking, and cycling can help improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and strengthen muscles around the affected areas.

6. Compression Garments: These garments provide support to the affected areas, reducing pain and swelling.

7. Dietary Changes: A healthy diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods can help control swelling and improve overall health.

Why It’s Important to Get Treatment:
Without treatment, lipedema can progress, leading to secondary conditions like **lymphedema**, which involves additional swelling due to lymphatic fluid buildup. Early diagnosis and consistent treatment are key to managing symptoms and improving quality of life.

If you suspect you have lipedema, it’s important to speak with a healthcare professional who understands the condition. At Adore Skin Studio Med Spa, we can help manage your lipedema symptoms with personalized treatment plans, including weight management, peptide therapies, and more.

For optimal results, a series of 6 to 12 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart is recommended.
